I am currently reading The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George, and it reminds me that sometimes the right map isn’t made of paper…it’s made of stories.

Or, in my case this week... data!

🗺️ The Explorer’s Log

The light is hitting the metal rooftops of the security sector of Paris, where I’m currently writing this Dispatch from: an evening café not far from the Arc de Triomphe, just behind the Champs-Élysées. The dim lighting and drizzling rain are mingling with the metallic scent of ironwork rising from the city.

I am, quite simply, in one of the most magical places in the world.

And honestly? It feels easy.

The Travel Fatigue That Never Came

You know that feeling…

The moment you step off a long-haul flight (or in my case, a 6.5hr drive), the mental load begins:

• Which day is the Louvre closed?

• How fast can we get from Versailles back to the city?

• Is that amazing sight going to close before we get there?

The fatigue isn’t physical; it’s the constant, low-grade stress of logistical choreography.

We had a non-negotiable schedule: Tuesday through Friday, hitting the iconic museums, managing a missed entry ticket, and fitting in a major day trip to Versailles.

It was a logistical minefield—especially when you want to avoid standing in a single line for more than five minutes!

The Scout in My Pocket: Solving for Time

This trip, however, felt different. I didn’t just use Google’s Gemini to find the nearest bakery; I used it as my Chief Logistics Officer prior to and during my trip.

The most critical moment was realizing the Louvre is closed on Tuesdays - something that Gemini flagged immediately. Then, when our Sainte-Chapelle entry time was missed, we needed a super-precise solution: Could we fit Sainte-Chapelle into a 75-minute window before our 10:30am Louvre entry?

The answer, after factoring in the known 45-minute security line wait-time, was a firm no!

Gemini came to the rescue and helped me map out the hiccup: Move the Sainte-Chapelle visit to 9:00am on Friday morning, timed to finish just before we needed to drive to Chessy for a crucial 11:00am reservation. It was a high-stakes transfer, from a dense courthouse complex to a long-distance drive, but Gemini ensured the timeline was not just possible, but secure.

The Lesson: A Slower, More Present Business

This is the connection to “Slow Business.” By outsourcing the mental burden of sequencing, checking museum closures, and calculating optimal train reversals (yes, we even solved that puzzle for the Bernina Express, which you’ll hear all about in Part II), I wasn’t spending my day staring at Google Maps or frowning at a reservation PDF.

I was present.

I was able to spend that precious time walking the cobbled streets of the Île de la Cité with my husband, fully immersed in the beautiful chaos of Paris, knowing that my ‘Scout’ had already solved tomorrow, and the next day, right down to the minute.

That, my friends, is the true ROI of integrating AI into your life tasks: it buys back your presence.

Hello Fellow Explorers,

How have you been intentionally shifting through these changing seasons? For me, my #fallintoautumn has been much more gentle this year…a slower, delightful transition.

Along with these slower shifts, I decided to begin a new creative activity this month… learning to crochet.

I love knitting during the winter, and while we’re not quite there yet, I’m totally up for creating some of my favorite childhood characters as crochet figurines. I might even stuff them full of catnip and gift them to my boys!

It’s a small moment of creative mischief, a “what if” detour from the plan. Which leads me to a question for you...

🗺️ The Explorer’s Log

Reflecting on this week’s “reckless” theme took me back almost two decades ago, to a Christmas adventure in Berlin.

Before Google Maps, I would get up every morning and run 10k in a different direction from my hotel, with no plan.

Many have told me it’s wiser (and safer) to be planned. But I suppose that’s where I feel most alive in my creative process. That feeling is something which:

• Brings me joy,

• Fuels my creative energy,

• And creates space for me to wander and wonder.

By getting intentionally lost, I discovered new monuments, magical parks, and spectacular bridges I never would have found otherwise.

Could I have planned it?

Absolutely.

But my creative process is not always a rigid route.

It’s messy.
It’s reckless.
And it’s perfectly imperfect…
just the way I love it.

⚙️ This Week’s Creative System

This week’s system is, fittingly, an anti-system: “The ‘What If?’ Detour.”

It’s the conscious habit of allowing for, and even seeking out, detours from the plan. When we intentionally embrace spontaneity as a repeatable practice, we open the ‘Door to Wonder’ with a sense of freedom and childlike playfulness.

Why not give one of these “What If’s” a go this week?

• 🎨 Say “yes” to a random creative urge, like starting a drawing with the “wrong” tool.

• 🧭 Trust your gut. The plan may say X, but if you’re feeling more like Y today, go with it.

• 🎉 Indulge in something new, like an extra movie night or accepting a friend’s invite to a pizza-making class.

My husband gifted me a Disney “Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas Colouring Book”, a moment of pure serendipity this week. It leans beautifully into the slower, gentle autumnal shifts.

Coloring is a creative, mindful practice, but this particular book also sparks memory recall of a favorite childhood movie, blending nostalgia with presence…such a wonderful example of creative mischief!

What is the biggest fear that holds you back from starting something new? For me, it’s the fear of the new thing not being ‘good enough’.

One small tactic that’s been helping me this year is public accountability. Sharing the dates and times for our events here with you, means that regardless of whether I feel “ready” or not, the publish button gets clicked. Deadlines, which may sometimes seem stressful, can also be delightful moments of bravery.

The shift from a simple blog feed to a curated, story-driven front door was a huge undertaking, but the feeling of clarity and warm welcome it now provides, was truly worth every reflective step.

It’s a timely example of how building a highly connected creative system can create more intentional space for joy.

It’s a simple framework to protect your creative energy and ensure you are nurturing all parts of your practice.

The cycle dedicates one day each month to a specific mode:
one for sketching,

In honor of World Tourism Day this coming Saturday, I’ve been reflecting on the connection between travel and sustainable creative practice.

This selfie-photo was taken at the Colossi of Memnon, on the West Bank, of Luxor, Egypt, whilst living and working in Cairo, almost a decade ago.

For me, creative travel isn’t just about gaining inspiration; it’s about giving back.

Every tourist ticket purchased at sites like this directly supports the local economy and helps preserve these incredible works of art, culture, and history, for future generations.

It’s a beautiful, sustainable system where our curiosity can directly contribute to the cultures that inspire us.

A key spark was the discussion on what rainbows have symbolized in mythology and art throughout history. It’s a beautiful reminder that a single visual phenomenon can hold a universe of different meanings, depending on the lens through which we view it.

This week’s theme is “Building Sustainable Systems.” The irony is, building a new system is often a messy, unsustainable process at first.

Creating the new homepage and all the interconnected pages was a huge undertaking. There were moments of frustration, technical glitches, and the constant, nagging feeling that it wasn’t “perfect” yet.

The breakthrough finally came though, when I leaned on to our core value: “Process Over Polish.” I had to accept that the system didn’t need to be perfect on day one; it just needed to be better. It was a powerful reminder that…

When was the last time you took an unexpected turn?

I began the month with a random exploration of the unchartered spaces around my home. Having lived here for over two years, I thought I knew every path. But then I saw someone disappear between an overgrown bush and a metal barrier at the end of the Thames Pathway.

Of course, I followed them into the unknown.

That single, curious step led to a 6km-walk where I discovered a part of the Wharf I’d never seen. It was a powerful reminder: the most exciting discoveries often lie just one step off the beaten path.

This week, let’s explore the idea that "disagreement is a creative spark." Here is a simple 3-step process for turning friction into fuel:

1. Identify an idea you strongly disagree with.

2. Articulate precisely why you disagree.

3. Construct your alternative point of view. This friction is often where your most original ideas are born.

August was a month of resilience. After my surgery, I wasn't sure what my physical or creative capacity would look like. But slowly, I found my rhythm. It was a huge milestone to finally cross the 2-week recovery barrier, and I was so excited to return to my weightlifting routine, especially with these brand new pair of weightlifting shoes that my wonderful husband gifted me - can you believe they were perfectly on brand?! 🙃

On my first walk back to the gym, I paused to capture how these delicate raindrops brought out the vibrant colors of the flowers.

It was a beautiful reminder that there is strength in gentleness. And speaking of strength, I am incredibly proud of this achievement. Despite two weeks of recovery, I was still able to hit my goal.

Challenging our physical,
emotional,
and creative resilience every day is where the real growth happens.

It was the perfect, quiet culmination of our August journey.

Sourced from a brilliant episode of the Creative Pep Talk podcast, it explores the idea that storytelling, curiosity, and creativity are fundamental, ancient human technologies. It feels like the perfect next step after a month of exploring our own creative compasses.

This month's spark was inspired by a conversation about Steven Pressfield's "The War of Art" and the concept of "Resistance." It reminded me of a fantastic episode of the Savvy Painter Podcast titled "The Voice that Says You're Not Ready? Fire It."

The key takeaway is to treat that inner critic not as a part of you, but as an external force that you have the power to dismiss.

It's a powerful mindset shift for any creator facing the blank page.

I want to give a warm shoutout to the incredible Kosha Bathia from Mumbai! During our Co-Wondering Space meetup, Kosha joined us while walking through the city to an appointment. We set the agenda aside and instead had a wonderful 45-minute conversation about entrepreneurship, creativity, and navigating life as a creator. It was a perfect reminder that this space is truly about "Connection over Content."

Imagine opening your favorite weekly newsletter - why is it the one you can’t wait to open every week?

A newsletter can look like a neat, polished package when it arrives in your inbox. But behind the scenes, life is rarely so tidy. Some journeys we plan with a map, and others we simply have to navigate as they unfold, responding to the messy, beautiful, and unexpected parts of life.

This week's dispatch is about the tools, frameworks, and connections that guide us on all our journeys - whether they're creative, professional, or deeply personal.

🗺️ The Explorer's Log

I’ve been on a journey today, though not the holiday kind.

I’m not long home from a small operation at the hospital. Sitting down to write this final section, chamomile tea in hand, and share this update with you - it feels like the peaceful and soothing healing the doctor ordered. It prompts a question:

How are you giving yourself permission to be human these days?

Life has its ups and downs, like a rollercoaster. The winding, wandering path is all part of the beautiful journey. I want to embrace more of the hiccups. I want to be agile and patient with myself, not just inside my business. I want to learn to show up more as all of me, just as I am.

In slowing down, showing up as you are, and braving the 'blank page' one step at a time… the conversation continues, and we build something beautiful together.

Today, I’m so grateful to the UK doctors, surgeons and nurses who took care of me, to the support systems around me, and to have the health to share my story.

🔓 The Creative Threshold: The Intimidation of the Blank Prompt Box

"What if my prompt isn’t good enough? How do I even start a conversation with an AI when I'm feeling uninspired myself?"

If you've had these thoughts, you are not alone. The intimidation of the blank prompt box is real. I've felt that uncertainty and overwhelm, too, especially when facing a powerful new AI-tool for the first time.

It’s a feeling layered with valid concerns: I care about the environmental impact, the data I upload, and the simple fear of "getting it wrong." That "AI Anxiety" and "Fear of Imperfection" is a normal part of navigating any new creative frontier.

So, how do I move through it? By leaning on a process. Using simple frameworks like the ✅ Human <> AI Partnership Checklist we shared in the last Dispatch, and the 👓 3 Lenses of AI Ideation in this issue, gives me a clear starting point. They transform the intimidating blank box into an invitation. From there, it's just about taking it one step at a time.

⚙️ This Week's Creative System

In our LIVE Sparks! livestream yesterday, we explored a simple but powerful framework for using AI as a creative muse to beat the blank page. It’s a repeatable method for turning different inputs into visual ideas and a low-risk way to use Generative AI as a thinking partner or coach.

👓 3 Lenses of AI Ideation

• 🔍 Lens 1: REFLECT

  • The Practice: Turn your lived experiences into visual prompts. Describe a memory, a feeling, or your current sensory experience in a text prompt and ask the AI to suggest visual concepts.

• 🧩 Lens 2: REMIX

  • The Practice: Transform the abstract into the concrete. Draw a random squiggle, upload the image to a multimodal AI, and prompt it to find patterns or suggest what the shape could become.

• 💡 Lens 3: REVEAL

  • The Practice: Uncover hidden ideas in existing data. Feed a Generative AI model a block of text (like a description of a recent meal or a link to an interesting article) and ask it to "reveal" core themes and suggest icons to represent them.

The above framework represents a few low-risk, collaborative ways in which you can use your Generative AI-tools to support you in beginning a sketch or sketchnote.

One of the things that I’ve been carrying with me this week, since beginning Greg McKeown’s Essentialism is that the pursuit of less isn't just about decluttering, but about asking "why." Just as we ask "why" before turning to an AI, it's essential to ask it for all things. I started to wonder:

1. What if looking at every choice through the lens of ‘why’ is the simplest way to eliminate all that is not essential?

2. I’ll be journaling on this over the next couple of weeks. Is this something you’ve been curious about, too?

A recent podcast, Brave New Bookshelf, discussed how writers can use AI to amplify their voice and expand creative horizons. Episode 46's a great listen that returns to this idea of the lens through which we wonder.

I’m absolutely delighted to celebrate this inspiring member of our community, Tamar Stoltz. If you’ve ever been unsure about the magic of connection on Substack, this is your reminder. Tamar commented on one of my Notes a couple of months ago, and we immediately knew we had to connect.

It’s nothing short of what I experienced inside our Creatively Wondering community this week. After reading the publication's About Page, they felt our community wasn't a good fit for them.

After a deeper conversation over Substack Chat, I came to understand that it wasn't because they hadn't felt welcome, but rather because my messaging about creativity on the publication's about page wasn't as inclusive as it should be.

This single experience was my ‘aha’ moment this week, which "built a bridge" to a deeper understanding of what creativity actually means to our community, and how it's so much more than just visual art.

Open-ended communication, open-mindedness to explore a bit deeper, and nonjudgemental reflective responses created a bridge, which is exactly what we’re going to get into below.

⚙️ This Week's Creative System:

This new sub-section of our bi-weekly Atelier Dispatch newsletter, replaces the previous Wondering Path sub-section, to provide you with an actionable framework or mini-guide that you can apply immediately.

I’m sharing a simple “Human <> AI Partnership Checklist” with you below, that you can use as an entry point to beginning your collaboration with an AI-GPT (Generative Pre-Trained Transformer), like ‘ChatGPT’, ‘Claude’, or ‘Gemini’.

1. What is my specific goal? What do I want to achieve with this collaboration?

2. What is the AI's role vs. my role? What are specifics tasks that I can assign respectively?

3. How will I maintain my unique voice?

4. Which AI GPT will I partner with? What are the criteria that align with my values and ethics?

5. How will I verify the AI’s output?

There are many things that we can add to this beginning framework, but these initial reflection questions will give you a starting point, to help you take your first risks in co-creation.

🗺️ The Explorer's Log

This week, I went on an unexpected and incredibly valuable expedition, not to a physical place, but into the heart of our own community. It began with a private message from a new member, a brilliant writer who, after looking at our publication, felt they didn't belong because they weren’t a "visual artist."

Their words were a map to a blind spot that I didn't know I had.

It was a powerful reminder that the tools we use—whether it's a pen or a paintbrush, a keyboard or a camera—don't define our creativity.

The real magic is in the curiosity that drives us to use them.

This feedback has already set us on a new course, and I'm so deeply grateful. It's a perfect example of how the most important discoveries on any journey are the ones that help us to see the path ahead more clearly, together.

🔓 The Creative Threshold

I’m deciding to share a vulnerable reflection with you today, all about the "Am I Creative Enough?" gap.

Yes, you read that correctly - The GAP.

While my last two decades of working internationally helped me break through my own 'imposter syndrome,' I still feel it so deeply when others express these sentiments.

I know all too well how that can feel.

It particularly hit home for me this week, when I read the words ‘I don’t have an artistic gene in me.’

Have you also said similar things like that as well?

• ‘Oh, not me, I’m not an artist.’’

• ‘I’m not sure I’m the creative type, to be honest.’

• ‘I couldn’t paint/draw if my life depended on it!’

It’s not your fault.

I believe that for people born into generations like mine, as a Millennial, or even Generation X, that we were raised to understand that you had to fit into a traditional “artist” mold, in order to be a creative.

For myself? I was super fortunate to grow up with exceptional teachers in Canada, who saw potential and helped me to discover my own pathways and strengths as a creative individual. One of those strengths being the ‘art of discovery’ to inspire wonder, curiosity, and imagination, which is exactly what I love most about sharing with you-here at Creatively Wondering-on a shared expedition to discover and build out our creative capacity, which exists within you…right this second!

You don’t have to be able to draw, paint, sing, dance, or anything else that’s traditionally labelled as 'The Arts' to be creative.

You are creative.

In fact, I would argue that some of the most brilliant creatives of all time, shine through in legends Frida Khalo, Alan Turing, Marie Curie, Alexander Graham Bell, Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin—the list goes on.

Creativity exists at the core of innovation. In my humble opinion, it’s a space that’s constantly breaking boundaries and traditional norms, which makes it a beautiful and exciting place to be.

That whole idea of 'Resistance' that was explored in the podcast below, has been sparking so much for me. It’s what inspired me to order Stephen Pressfield's book, “The War of Art", on that very topic.

It makes me think about the books on our own shelves—the ones we can't wait to dive into. It's worth asking ourselves what books are waiting to take us down our own 'wondering paths'.

I listened to a very powerful podcast episode while walking outdoors this weekend, from the Savvy Painter Podcast, called “The Voice That Says You’re Not Ready? Fire It.”

This episode resonated deeply with this month’s theme of creating and building something sustainable, which as you have probably experienced at one point or another in life, includes the ‘resistance’ struggle.

A brilliant ‘aha’ moment about depersonalizing resistance. When looking at things from an alternative perspective, without taking it personally, might you be more regulated and clear-headed, to better handle the resistance in that moment?

🔦 The Connection Spotlight

This week's spotlight isn't on a person, but on a process: the powerful act of a community building itself.

I had a conversation this week with a new member who gave me direct, honest, and invaluable feedback about how our publication's messaging was being perceived.

It was the kind of feedback that is a true gift. It sparked this entire dispatch and has already set us on a path to make Creatively Wondering a more inclusive and welcoming space for all types of creative minds.

It’s a beautiful reminder that the strongest communities are the ones where we listen, learn, and grow together.

One Tuesday a month, I'll be sending this more personal, structured letter from my creative headquarters. It's a place for us to explore the real-life inputs that lead to creative output.

The Explorer's Log 🗺️

Last week, on a walk to a new gym, I turned a corner and saw it: a gigantic whale sculpture, leaping from the canal waters beside the sidewalk. The sheer scale and surprise of it was breathtaking.

But that wasn’t the only secret it was holding.

This moment sparked something profound in me, and I’m diving deep into what it taught me in next week’s Deeper Reflection. For now, I'll leave you with the same sense of wonder I felt.

The Wonder Shelf 📚

I just finished reading Martina Flor’s book, “Make It: Turn Your Creative Skill into a Business and Thrive Doing What You Love,” which is a masterclass in turning creative skill into a thriving business.

One idea that struck me was her take on redefining success. When you forge your own path, you get the freedom to decide what "success" actually looks and feels like, rather than chasing outdated metrics.

It leaves me with a powerful question for all of us: If you could ignore everyone else's definition, what is the one metric that would truly define a "successful" creative week for you?

I was listening to a podcast on creative burnout, and the guest suggested taking "curiosity walks" as an antidote. My 'aha' moment was realizing that watching my cat, Simba, chase a butterfly in the garden is my version of a curiosity walk.

It’s a moment of pure, unproductive, playful presence.

Launching a new, multi-part format like this is its own creative challenge! My brain wanted it to be perfect from the start. But perfection is a trap. The real first step was simply deciding to begin, to share Version 1 with you, and to trust that we will build and refine it together.

This week, I’m sharing an Inspirational Find.

I received a delivery from the UK-based supply company The Inky Shop Uk, and was blown away by their customer service.

They included free items and a hand-written note to make up for a stock issue.

It was a simple act of kindness and professionalism that I believe we should all celebrate.

The Wondering Path 🛣️

At the #isc25uk conference, Eleanor Beer shared a business insight that has stuck with me all week: “Your best work isn’t the most detailed—it’s the most felt.”

This is such a powerful business takeaway for any creative.

It’s a practical reminder that our greatest value proposition isn’t technical perfection, but our ability to create an emotional connection with our audience and clients. It's a "Useful How" for prioritizing what truly matters.
